National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion

On May 21 2019, an Announcement of Identifying the Fourth Batch of National Clinical Research Centers was jointly released by Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, Logistics Department of Central Military Commission and National Medical Products Administration. It announced that 18 hospitals covering 10 disease fields are recognized as National Clinical Research Centers. Finally, the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was successfully approved as a National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion.

National clinical research center is the important part of national innovation system of science and technology. And it focuses on requirements for disease prevention and treatment in China. Besides, it emphasizes clinical application and chiefly comprises medical institutions with the support from a collaborative network. Moreover, it is a national science and technology innovation base with clinical research, collaborative innovation, academic exchanges, talent training, achievement transformation and promotion and application of technological innovation.

In the future, under the guidance of resource integration, advantages complementation, systematic solutions (attacking key problems systematically) and joint construction and sharing, the National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion establishes a collaborative innovation network covering the whole country and carries out clinical evidence-based research on Acupuncture and Moxibustion intervention on stroke, hypertension, vascular cognitive disorder and side effects of tumor radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Moreover, the center cultivates talents and innovation teams and formulates national acupuncture and moxibustion treatment standards. Additionally, it realizes clinical application and promotion of scientific research achievements and builds an advanced center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion clinical medicine and translational research.

National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion

National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion comprises National Acupuncture and Moxibustion Clinical Research Center, National Clinical Research Base of Traditional Chinese Medicine (stroke), Innovation Team of Ministry of Education for Acupuncture Treatment of Encephalopathy and Regional Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Center of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The center has more than 400 medical personnel, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 master of traditional Chinese medicine, 1 national famous doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, 2 outstanding experts of National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, 4 experts with the special allowance from the State Council, 3 inheritance experts of traditional Chinese medicine, 5 famous traditional Chinese doctors of Tianjin and 5 “131” talents of Tianjin. There are 246 key members, including 44 with doctoral degree and 95 with master degree. The center includes Tianjin Acupuncture and Moxibustion Research Institute and post-doctoral workstation for Acupuncture and Moxibustion projects. And it has1,000 inpatient beds, 16 Acupuncture and Moxibustion sections, 1 rehabilitation department, 1 encephalopathy intervention department and 52 clinics. Therefore, it has formed a multi-directional, multi-disciplinary and multi-functional academic team with clinical treatment, teaching, clinical research, basic research, international exchanges, personnel training, technology promotion, professional popularity and international medical consultation. In recent years, we accepted more than 70,000 inpatients and nearly 3 million outpatients. At the same time, we achieved 6 patents in these five years. We formulated 48 international standards, national standards, industrial standards, etc. Besides, more than 20 clinical treatment plans, methods and Acupuncture and Moxibustion technical specifications were formulated. And our achievements are promoted to nearly 300 hospitals nationwide and more than 60 countries and regions. We have held 14 International Acupuncture and Moxibustion Conferences consecutively. More than 13,000 international students from 91 countries and regions were accepted. China leads Acupuncture and Moxibustion in the world, and Tianjin leads Acupuncture and Moxibustion in China. Hence, the center has always been in the leading position in the field of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at home and abroad. It not only leads the development of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, but also positions as the origin of new Acupuncture and Moxibustion technique and the place of producing achievements and training talents. Moreover, it serves the strategies of Healthy China and the Belt and Road Initiative, enhances the influence of Acupuncture and Moxibustion internationally and creates a first-class center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion clinical medicine and translational research.

  Development

  In 1962, the first Acupuncture and Moxibustion ward was set up in China.

  In 1988, the hospital became the National Clinical Research Center for Acupuncture and Moxibustion (the only one in China).

  In 2002, Acupuncture and Moxibustion became the key discipline of Ministry of Education.

  In 2007, Acupuncture and Moxibustion department became the teaching team of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Ministry of Education (the first one in the field of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).

  In 2008, the hospital became the National Clinical Research Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Stroke).

  In 2008, the hospital became the pilot construction unit of standardization research center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (the only one in China).

  In 2009, the hospital became the construction unit of standardization demonstration base of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion.

  In 2018, the hospital was approved as a National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion.

  Academic Leader of the Center: Professor Shi Xuemin, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Professor Shi Xuemin, the head of National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion, is also the founder of contemporary Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Besides, he is a famous acupuncturist in China, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Currently, he is the honorary president of the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. And he has led the hospital to accomplish historic upgrading two times.

Shi Xuemin is hailed as a master and diplomat of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. He invented the “Xing Nao Kai Qiao” Therapy (activating the brain and opening the orifices) and “Shi’s Stroke Unit Therapy”, which made breakthroughs in treating stroke. And he established quantity theory of puncture manipulation, which greatly promoted the standardization of puncture manipulation, from traditional manipulation to standardization and quantification of puncture manipulation. Besides, he developed Dan Qi Pian Tan Capsule and Nao Xue Shuan Tablet and so on. Thus, combining acupuncture with medications became an important part of Shi’s Stroke Unit Therapy. Furthermore, he is committed to academic exchanges and promotion of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. He established 60 clinical branch centers of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in China. Professor Shi has been to more than 100 countries and regions for lectures and consultations, which made tremendous contribution to developing Acupuncture and Moxibustion worldwide.

  In 1999, he was elected as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

  In 2000, he achieved a Science and Technology Progress Award of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in Hong Kong.

  In 2001, he achieved an Outstanding Science and Technology Achievements Award of Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation in Hong Kong.

  In 2006, he won the first Special Contribution Award of Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance of China Association of Chinese Medicine.

  In 2008, he achieved a “Wang Dingyi Cup” Traditional Chinese Medicine International Contribution Award of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.

  In 2013, Stroke Treated with Xing Nao Kai Qiao Therapy was included in achievements database of wellbeing plans of Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Science and Technology. It was also included in Science of Acupuncture and MoxibustionAcupuncture and Moxibustion Theraphy and other national textbooks.

  In 2014, he was honored with the Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the second batch.

  In 2016, he achieved an Acupuncture and Moxibustion Inheritance Award of China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion.

  In 2017, he achieved an Outstanding Academic Contribution Award of the first batch of Tian Sheng Bronze Man of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.

  In 2018, he was honored with Good Doctor in China by Central Civilization Construction Office and National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China.

  In 2018, he was honored with Representative Inheritor of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism.
