Established in 1954, the orthopedics department has evolved over 70 years of inheritance and innovation into a specialized traditional Chinese medicine orthopedics department that integrates medical treatment, education, and research. The department possesses the ability to treat critical and difficult orthopedic diseases through the integration of TCM with western medicine. Currently, the department has 100 medical and nursing staff, including 26 with senior professional titles, 11 with intermediate professional titles, five with doctoral degrees, 27 with master’s degrees, one famous TCM doctor of Tianjin and one young famous TCM doctor of Tianjin. In recent years, it has undertaken two projects under the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” of scientific and technological support, two major projects under the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, eight projects at the provincial and ministerial level, and six projects at the municipal level. It has received one second prize for scientific and technological progress at the provincial or ministerial level, one third prize for scientific and technological progress at the provincial or ministerial level, and three academic book awards at provincial or ministerial level. Moreover, the department has authored eight books.
The department comprises outpatient, emergency, wards (four sections), and the Tianjin Ye’s Orthopedic Injury Research Center. Currently, it has 150 beds, with an annual outpatient volume of 124,000 visits and 3,800 discharged patients per year. Its main technical development directions include trauma orthopedic surgery, minimally invasive orthopedic treatment, osteoporosis treatment, and traditional manual therapy. Dominant diseases include knee joint diseases, cervical spondylosis, lumbar spine diseases, vertebral osteoporotic fractures, elderly hip fractures, and scoliosis. Additionally, it has developed and researched specialized medications such as Rongjin Pills, Bone Healing Elixir, and Hemostatic Analgesic Ointment as distinctive in-house formulations.
